The U.S. Space Force has awarded 20 small enterprises positions on a potential $1 billion contract to develop a next-generation ground system for military satellites, SpaceNews reported Friday.
Rapid Resilient Command and Control is a small business set-aside program that seeks to build a ground system on a commercial cloud architecture to support space operations missions, such as maneuvering military space assets in response to threats.
The Space Rapid Capabilities Office will use the multi-year R2C2 indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract to issue task orders for software tools and infrastructure designed to enable the service branch’s operators to reposition satellites and perform other operations in a more agile manner.
Through R2C2, the Space RCO said it will procure software systems in “bite-sized” pieces and expects to award the initial task orders in the next few months.
