Executive Mosaic is pleased to announce that John Sherman, chief information officer for the Department of Defense (DOD), officially received his 2022 Wash100 Award during the 3rd Annual CIO Summit from Potomac Officers Club where Sherman was featured as the leading keynote speaker.
John Sherman was presented with the most prestigious and acclaimed award in all of government contracting (GovCon) by Executive Mosaic CEO Jim Garrettson at Tuesday’s event for his leadership in multiple roles that are monumental to the implementation of the Pentagon’s overall cybersecurity and digital transformation strategies.
During his keynote speech, the first-time Wash100 winner discussed DoD’s pivot to advance its cloud adoption efforts despite the uphill battle as well as how the department was moved away from the Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure contract and into its new multi-cloud, multi-award Joint Warfighter Cloud Capability (JWCC).
In Sept. 2021, President Biden nominated John Sherman to serve as the Chief Information Officer for DOD to bring his 25 years of experience across the national security sector and the intelligence community to the department. In the role, he leads DoD’s modernization efforts in cybersecurity, cloud and collaboration across all of the innovation areas in the federal landscape.
In addition, Sherman was also announced as the leader of the Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) program and assume responsibility from the office of the undersecretary of defense for acquisition and sustainment as part of a realignment effort.
Sherman mentioned during his keynote speech that his top priority was amending the CMMC program beyond the Washington DC metropolitan area and to the rest of our country. He said that the needle will need to move in cybersecurity and CMMC to keep up with the global threat space as it continues to escalate in the future.
“I’m going to expect you to see something that is understandable, that makes maybe a little more sense of where we started, looking at maybe three versus five levels, but very importantly, for small and medium-sized businesses, that we have taken steps to make this 800-171 implementation a bit more palatable and doable,” Sherman explained.
