Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) has won a potential three-year, $108.3M contract from the U.S. Air Force to conduct technology maturation and risk reduction efforts to support the development of a reentry vehicle for the W87-1 nuclear warhead.
The Air Force Nuclear Weapons Center awarded the Mk21A Re-entry Vehicle project after a competitive solicitation and the service branch will obligate $8M at the time of award, the Department of Defense said Wednesday.
Work will take place in King of Prussia, Pa., through October 2022.
Under the contract, Lockheed will aim to address potential technical risk of the RV platform, which will be built to deliver a warhead when launched from USAF’s Ground Based Strategic Deterrent system.
The GBSD intercontinental ballistic missile is intended to replace LGM-30G Minuteman III missiles.
