Ball Aerospace Names Goddard Center Head Rob Strain New COO

Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp. (NYSE: BLL) has appointed Rob Strain, NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center director, as chief operating officer effective March 2012..

Ball Aerospace said Strain will oversee the company’s operations and will lead support functions including:

  • engineering
  • program execution
  • mission assurance
  • information technology

Strain has served as director of Goddard since August 2008. Prior to joining NASA, he was head of the space department at Johns Hopkins University’s applied physics lab.

Strain, a 25-year aerospace veteran, has also held executive positions at Orbital Sciences. At Orbital Sciences, he led the company’s satellite and electronic sensors divisions.

Strain will report to Ball Aerospace President and CEO David Taylor.

“He has a unique blend of experience in the private, public and academic sectors of this market, including the majority of the company’s core markets, ” Taylor said.
