Leidos (NYSE: LDOS) has received a potential 14-year, $117 million task order to build a seventh-generation geostationary Earth orbit satellite in support of the Federal Aviation Administration™s Wide Area Augmentation System.
WAAS works to augment the GPS Standard Positioning Service to ensure the safety of flight operations, the company said Monday.
Leidos will perform work in Gaithersburg, Maryland, and collaborate with Intelsat General, Knight Sky and U.S. Electrodynamics to develop, integrate and test a payload for the GEO 7 satellite and two land-based uplink stations designed to transmit GPS navigation data.
The task order has a development period of four years and an operations and maintenance phase that will run for 10 years.
Leidos said the GEO 7 satellite payload is slated for lift-off in the first quarter of 2020 and will begin its 10-year operational phase in 2021.
