The Department of Defense said Thursday HHI will conduct advanced planning and procurement of material necessary for the eventual inactivation and defueling of the CVN 68 aircraft carrier.
USS Nimitz Inactivation Contract Specifications
The cost-plus-fixed-fee and cost-plus-incentive-fee contract is initially valued at $22.3 million but may rise to $358.6 million if all options are exercised. The project, which will be conducted in Newport News, Virginia, is set to be completed by March 2026 but may extend until October 2027.
The Naval Sea Systems Command in Washington, D.C., will handle the contract. It will obligate $21.7 million from the Navy’s fiscal 2025 operations and maintenance funds at the time of the award. The initial fund will expire at the end of the fiscal year.
HII’s shipbuilding division, Newport News Shipbuilding, completed the inactivation of the USS Enterprise in 2018. The inactivation process, which started in 2013, involved the defueling of eight nuclear reactors and the deactivation of the propulsion systems. HII will use the experience gained here in the inactivation of the USS Nimitz.
