Pentagon’s CDAO Office to Oversee Generative AI Task Force; Craig Martell Quoted

The Department of Defense has formed a task force that intends to advance the responsible development and deployment of large language models and other generative artificial intelligence technologies across DOD.

DOD said Thursday the chief digital and AI office will lead Task Force Lima, which will help mitigate risk and address redundancy as the department pursues generative AI initiatives.

“The DoD has an imperative to responsibly pursue the adoption of generative AI models while identifying proper protective measures and mitigating national security risks that may result from issues such as poorly managed training data,” said Craig Martell, chief digital and AI officer at DOD.

“We must also consider the extent to which our adversaries will employ this technology and seek to disrupt our own use of AI-based solutions,” added Martell, a 2023 Wash100 awardee.

Kathleen Hicks, deputy secretary of DOD and a three-time Wash100 Award recipient, directed the establishment of the task force to help evaluate and advance the use of generative AI capabilities across the department and protect national security.

Task Force Lima will help develop a framework for the Pentagon to accelerate generative AI programs and joint platforms, federate disparate developmental and research efforts into a community of practice and ensure coordinated DOD engagement with interagency, industry, civil society, educational and international partners to advance responsible development and adoption of AI, according to a Thursday memo signed by Hicks.
