A joint venture of Fluor (NYSE: FLR), BWX Technologies (NYSE: BWXT) and Jacobs Engineering Group (NYSE: JEC) has secured a potential 30-month, $850M contract modification to continue decontaminating and decommissioning the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant.
The modification results from an option exercised under the U.S. Department of Energy‘s authority, Fluor said Wednesday.
The joint venture, known as Fluor-BWXT Portsmouth, began decommissioning work at the Piketon, Ohio-based plant in 2011 under a five-year contract and continued for 30 additional months under an earlier modification awarded in 2016.
The new modification tasks the partnership to deactivate GDP facilities, process equipment and other associated liabilities in preparation for demolition.
The venture will also continue to provide environmental remediation support, uranium stewardship and outreach efforts.
The 1.2K-acre plant operated between 1994 and 2001. The DOE started cleanup activities at the area in 1989, its rehabilitation efforts augmented by the federal and Ohio Environmental Protection Agency.
