Hologic Lands $119M Gov't Contract for COVID-19 Test Production

Hologic has secured a $119M contract to increase production capacity for diagnostic kits and test consumables in support of government efforts to sustain the U.S. industrial base through the coronavirus pandemic.

The Department of Defense said Friday it coordinated with the Department of Health and Human Services to help the medical technology firm's supplier facilities manufacture 13M SARS-CoV-2 assays monthly by January 2022.

Contract funds are covered under the Health Care Enhancement Act, according to DoD.

Hologic developed its Panther Fusion and Aptima assay platforms for COVID-19 testing with support from the HHS' Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority.

The Food and Drug Administration granted emergency use authorization to both diagnostic tests earlier this year.

DoD estimates that the Hologic-made systems will help clinicians perform more than 1K tests daily, with each procedure taking three hours to produce results.
