The State Department has approved Romania’s foreign military sale request for the Patriot Air Defense System and related equipment, valued at $280 million.
The Defense Security Cooperation Agency said Monday RTX and Lockheed will be the principal contractors.
Patriot Air Defense System
Under the proposed FMS, Romania intends to purchase one AN/MPQ-65 Configuration 3+ Increment 3 radar set, one AN/MSQ-132 Engagement Control Station, two M903 launching stations and one Electrical Power Plant, or EPP, III.
The Southeastern European nation also requested non-MDE items, including launching station modification kits, Patriot Advanced Capability-3 Missile Segment Enhancement launcher conversion kit, generators and their spare parts, prime movers and their spare parts, KG-250X encryptor, AN/TPX-57v1 identification friend or foe, KIV-77 encryptor, personnel communication equipment training and Defense Advanced Global Positioning Systems Receivers, or DAGRs.
Furthermore, the potential deal includes U.S. government and contractor representative technical assistance, engineering and logistics support services, publications and technical documentation, classified software, classified books and publications and other related logistics and program support elements.
Enhancing National Security
Romania intends to strengthen its capabilities to defend against existing and future threats. In addition, the proposed deal aims to boost relations between the United States and Romania, a NATO ally, and bolster national security.
Under the proposed sale, the U.S. government and the contractors will each provide five representatives to stay in Romania for three years to provide support, particularly in training and equipment fielding.
The DSCA notified Congress of this proposed sale Monday.
