State Department Clears Philippines’ FMS Request for F-16 Aircraft

The State Department has approved the Philippines’ foreign military sale request for an estimated $5.58 billion worth of F-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft, missiles, equipment and related services.

Philippines’ FMS Details

The Defense Security Cooperation Agency said Tuesday Lockheed Martin, as the principal contractor for the proposed deal, will provide the Philippines with 16 F-16 C Block 70/72 and four F-16 D Block 70/72 aircraft. In addition, the Southeast Asian nation requested 24 F110-GE-129D or F100-PW-229 engines, 22 Improved Programmable Display Generators, 22 AN/APG-83 Active Electronically Scanned Array Scalable Agile Beam Radars, 22 Modular Mission Computers 7000AH and 22 Embedded Global Positioning System Inertial Navigation Systems with Selective Availability Anti-Spoofing Module or M-Code capability and Precise Positioning Service.

Other equipment included in the proposed sale are 88 LAU-129 guided missile launchers, 22 M61A1 anti-aircraft guns, 12 AN/AAQ-33 Sniper Advanced Targeting Pods and 24 Multifunctional Information Distribution System-Joint Tactical Radio Systems.

The Philippines is also planning to purchase the following:

  • 112 Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missiles Air Intercept Missile 120C-8
  • Four AMRAAM guidance sections
  • 36 Guided Bomb Unit 39/B Small Diameter Bombs Increment 1
  • Two GBU-39(T-1)/B SDB-1 guided test vehicles
  • 40 AIM-9X Block II Sidewinder missiles
  • 32 AIM-9X Block II Sidewinder Captive Air Training missiles
  • Four AIM-9X Block II Sidewinder guidance units
  • Three AIM-9X Block II Captive Air Training missile guidance units
  • 60 MK-82 500-lb general purpose bombs
  • 60 MK-84 2,000-lb general purpose bombs
  • 30 Joint Direct Attack Munition KMU-572 tail kits for GBU-38 or Laser JDAM GBU-54
  • 60 FMU-152 fuze systems
  • 30 MAU-210 enhanced computer control groups for GBU-50 Enhanced Paveway II
  • 32 MXU-651 air foil groups for GBU-50 EP II

The Philippines intends to strengthen its Air Force by enhancing maritime domain awareness, air defenses, close air support and aerial interdiction capabilities. The DSCA notified Congress of the potential sale Tuesday.
