“The Department of War has issued a letter stating that Palantir’s artificial intelligence platform, Maven Smart System, will become an official program of record, Reuters reported Friday.

The Pentagon’s move to formalize AI capabilities as programs of record reflects the broader momentum behind digital transformation efforts across the Army and joint force. In the March 9 letter to Pentagon leaders and military commanders, Deputy Secretary of War Steve Feinberg said integrating Maven would equip warfighters with tools to “detect, deter, and dominate” adversaries across operational domains.
Feinberg noted that the designation, which is expected to take effect by the end of the current fiscal year in September, would streamline Maven’s adoption across the military and provide stable, long-term funding.
What Is Palantir’s Maven Smart System?
According to Reuters, Maven is a command-and-control software platform that uses AI to process large volumes of battlefield data from satellites, radars, drones, sensors and intelligence reports.
The platform identifies potential threats and targets, including military vehicles, buildings and weapons stockpiles, and supports faster operational decision-making. It originated from the Pentagon’s Project Maven initiative launched in 2017 to analyze drone imagery.
How Will Oversight of Maven Change?
The memo directs the Pentagon to transfer oversight of the Maven program from the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency to the DOW Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office within 30 days.
The U.S. Army will take responsibility for future contracting actions with Palantir, according to the letter.
In July 2025, Palantir secured a potential $10 billion enterprise agreement from the Army to provide commercial software for warfighters.
How Does the US Military Leverage Palantir’s AI System?
The Army and U.S. Northern Command have integrated their respective AI-enabled platforms, which run on Palantir’s AI software, to improve data sharing and coordination in support of border security missions.
Separately, the Army’s Combined Arms Command is working to integrate the Maven Smart System into training and professional military education to accelerate adoption and improve decision-making across operational units.
