Scott Kawalek, sales director of payment solutions at Dell Technologies, said government agencies that intend to adopt a multicloud approach as part of their IT modernization efforts should plan well in advance before making transformational decisions and optimize multicloud capacity.
In an article published on Carahsoft.com, Kawalek wrote that agency IT leaders should plan for a multicloud ecosystem by determining whether a dataset is subject to regulatory requirements, identifying where to run applications and understanding the costs, among other things.
Bringing Together All Stakeholders
The Dell Technologies executive highlighted the need for organizations to consider the people and process aspects in multicloud adoption as part of their IT transformation initiatives.
“It’s best to bring together all stakeholders and develop a common toolset and DevOps platform that serves IT, application and development teams and encourages a platform-engineering culture,” Kawalek noted.
“A well-executed plan with a common toolset and perhaps a cloud management solution will streamline operations and offer flexibility now and well into the future as the agency continues to adapt to changing dynamics,” he added.
Access to Elastic Capacity to Address Growth in Usage
Kawalek said agencies should understand the need of having elastic capacity to address temporary or permanent growth in compute and storage usage as they work to meet their missions.
“Many agencies attempt to overprovision capacity through the use of capital expenditures, but that approach often fails because the government’s procurement process can’t keep up with the pace of change. Even worse, agencies risk acquiring and paying for excess capacity long before it will be used,” he wrote.
The sales director explained how services like Dell APEX Subscriptions could help agencies manage multicloud platforms and respond to ever-changing demands in capacity.
“Agencies are charged only for the capacity they use, which doesn’t include the buffer that has been installed in anticipation of projected future needs. With Dell APEX Subscriptions, an agency shifts the risk of unused buffer capacity to Dell,” Kawalek wrote.
He also discussed how APEX Subscriptions could help agencies achieve cost optimization and control.
