The White House said Coker’s nomination was sent to the Senate on Tuesday.
Coker is a senior fellow at Auburn University’s McCrary Institute for Cyber and Critical Infrastructure Security and serves as an outside adviser to cyber and technology companies. He is a member of Executive Mosaic’s Potomac Officers Club.
His government career included time as executive director of the National Security Agency and director of open source enterprise at the CIA’s directorate of digital innovation.
Coker spent two decades in the U.S. Navy, where he served as a surface warfare officer and an engineering duty officer, and held board seats at the U.S. Naval Academy Foundation, Dog Tag, the U.S. Navy Memorial and the Editorial Board of Studies in Intelligence.
If confirmed, Coker would succeed Kemba Eneas Walden, who took on the role of acting national cyber director following the retirement of Chris Inglis, a previous Wash100 awardee, in mid-February.
