Before transitioning to his civilian career, Chlan was with the office of the chief of naval operations, where he served as director of Next Generation Air Dominance requirements and director of F/A-18 fighter aircraft requirements.
Chlan’s naval career included time as director of training with the Strike Fighter Squadron VFA-211, director of maintenance and operations with Strike Fighter Squadron VFA-136 and commanding officer of Strike Fighter Squadron VFA-31.
He served as an assistant director and instructor at the Joint Targeting School, where he offered joint targeting training in support of combatant commands and other personnel of the Department of Defense.
