Aerospace sector veterans Chris Hadfield, Sandy Magnus, David Whelan, George Whitesides have joined a new board at Virgin Galactic (NYSE: SPCE) that will advise the company's senior leadership team on commercial spacelight and vehicle development matters.

Virgin Galactic said Tuesday its space advisory board members will hold discussions regarding operational and technical approaches and help the company become aware of business opportunities in the government and commercial sectors.

Hadfield previously led capsule communication for 25 missions under NASA's Space Shuttle program and operation of the International Space Station at the agency's Johnson Space Center in Texas.

Magnus spearheaded the NASA Astronaut Office in deputy chief role and held leadership positions at the Department of Defense and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. The former astronaut serves on NASA’s aerospace safety advisory board.

His previous roles included chief technologist within the defense, space and security segment at Boeing (NYSE: BA) and director of the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency’s Tactical Technology Office.
