Leonardo Subsidiary Gets $171M Option on Navy Training Helicopter Production Contract

A Leonardo subsidiary received a $171M contract modification to provide 36 additional TH-73A training helicopters to the U.S. Navy as part of the service branch’s Advanced Helicopter Training System initiative.

AgustaWestland Philadelphia will manufacture and deliver the helicopter trainers through December 2022 as part of the modification, which exercises options under a prior firm-fixed-price award, the Department of Defenses aid Thursday.

Naval Air Systems Command will obligate the modification’s full amount in fiscal 2021 aircraft procurement funds at the time of award.

Eighty-seven percent of contract work will take place in Philadelphia and the remaining 13 percent in other locations within and outside the continental U.S.

Issued in January, the original award is potentially worth $648.1M and has a base value of $176.5M to cover 32 TH-73A helicopters.

The award comes as part of the Navy's plans to add 130 TH-73As to its fleet by 2024.
