The U.S. Army has ordered more than $115 million worth of 5.56mm, 7.62mm and .50 caliber rounds from Orbital ATK (NYSE: OA).
Orbital ATK said Tuesday it will produce the ammunition at a U.S. government-owned, contractor-operated manufacturing plant located in Independence, Missouri.
The company has invested more than in research, development and capital resources at the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant since 2012.
More than 18 billion small-caliber ammunition products have been produced there for the U.S. military and its allies since 2000.
The Army and Orbital ATK have implemented modernization projects meant to increase the safety and quality of processes at the Lake City factory.
