Ted Tanner Named Leidos Chief Technology Officer

Leidos has appointed Theodore “Ted” Tanner Jr. as chief technology officer, succeeding Jim Carlini, who has held the role since 2019.

Tanner will officially assume the position on Jan. 5 and will be responsible for driving advancements in artificial intelligence, mission-critical software, cybersecurity and quantum technologies, Leidos said Monday.

Leidos CEO Tom Bell, a two-time Wash100 Award winner, described Tanner as a high-impact leader with entrepreneurial creativity and execution discipline.

“His track record of delivering bold, disruptive tech to defense, government and healthcare customers is a great fit with our capabilities and NorthStar 2030 growth priorities,” said Bell.

Who Is Ted Tanner Jr.?

Tanner, a seasoned AI technology executive with over 30 years of experience, joins Leidos after serving as BigBear.ai CTO for nearly two years. In this role, he led the delivery of advanced AI and ML capabilities, including decision intelligence, manned-unmanned teaming, logistics optimization and real-time situational awareness, for the Department of War, CIA, Defense Intelligence Agency and other organizations.

He previously served as chief administrative officer at Merative, global CTO and chief architect at IBM Watson Health, and co‑founder and CTO of PokitDok. Tanner also held senior technology leadership roles at Benefitfocus, BeliefNetworks, Microsoft and Apple. He was CTO at Spatializer Audio Labs and held engineering roles at the National Semiconductor Corp., Crystal River Engineering and Digidesign. He currently serves on the scientific advisory board of Quiver Bioscience.
