John Chen: BlackBerry Invests in Cloud Medical IT Firm NantHealth


healthcare-systemBlackBerry (NASDAQ: BBRY) has made an investment in NantHealth, a California-based startup that is developing cloud-based information technology for medical applications.

The companies seek to develop integrated IT systems to help healthcare organizations comply with privacy rules under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, BlackBerry said Tuesday.

“BlackBerry’s capabilities align closely with NantHealth’s and this investment represents the type of forward-looking opportunities that are vital to our future, ” said John Chen, BlackBerry executive chairman and CEO.

Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong founded NantHealth with the goal of providing technology designed to manage clinica data sharing and patient care.

BlackBerry says that NantHealth’s platform is currently used by 250 hospitals and in more than 16, 000 devices that are built to store vital sign data.

The alliance also intends to help customers analyze, secure and integrate cloud-based data by using BlackBerry’s QNX embedded operating system and BBM Protected mobile communication technology.
