Steve Kantor: L-3 to Build Missile Target Vehicles for MDA’s Aegis, THAAD Tests

L3 logoAn L-3 Communications (NYSE: LLL) business unit has won a potential $400 million contract to build missile target vehicles for the U.S. Missile Defense Agency.

The Coleman Aerospace business will develop and manufacture the medium-range ballistic missile targets in order to help MDA carry out tests on its missile defense systems, L-3 said Monday.

Steve Kantor, president of L-3’s electronic systems group, said the contract covers production of vehicles for MDA to use when testing the Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense and Terminal High Altitude Area Defense systems.

L-3 Coleman will also help MDA with inventory storage and maintenance, pre- and post-mission analysis, launch preparation, launch execution and engineering work.

The business unit has helped MDA carry out exercises with air launched single-stage, two-stage and three-stage targets.

Kantor said L-3 Coleman demonstrated its Extended Long Range Air Launched Target for MDA’s FTI-01 integrated live-fire demonstration in October 2012.

“This was one of the largest, most complex mission flight tests ever attempted, ” he said.
