Raytheon Technologies (NYSE: RTX) has secured a potential seven-year, $2.27B contract from the Missile Defense Agency to manufacture seven gallium nitride-based transportable surveillance radars for Saudi Arabia.
The AN/TPY-2 radar will be part of the kingdom’s Terminal High Altitude Area Defense interceptors and is designed to operate in the X band, the company said Friday.
Each radar can function in forward-based mode to detect a ballistic missile after launch and in terminal mode to guide the THAAD toward a missile warhead.
Bryan Rosselli, vice president of strategic missile defense at Raytheon Technologies’ missile and defense business, said adding GaN technology will increase system performance to detect, track and discriminate threats.
U.S.-controlled THAAD systems use seven of the 14 AN/TPY-2 radars that have been produced to date.
