Raytheon (NYSE: RTN) has received a $73 million contract modification from the Federal Aviation Administration to update a computer system that works to help air traffic controllers manage airspace.
The company said Tuesday it will conduct the first technical refresh of FAA’s Standard Terminal Automation Replacement System in an effort to facilitate integration of future NextGen ATC tools into the STARS infrastructure.
The project aims to help increase the efficiency and safety of the National Airspace System.
Bob Delorge, vice president of transportation and support services at Raytheon’s intelligence, information and services business, said that updates can help address ATC challenges in busy air corridors of the country.
FAA looks to implement terminal area weather analytics, performance-based flight path navigation and unmanned aircraft system services as part of the NextGen effort.
Both the FAA and the Defense Department use STARS to monitor complex terminal areas and security-sensitive minor air routes.
