The Department of Defense has selected Northrop Grumman (NYSE: NOC) to provide a command-and-control technology for interim use by the U.S. military to defend against small unmanned aerial systems.
The selection of Northrop’s Forward Area Air Defense C2 system came after a service board evaluated “best of breed” offerings that could support joint Counter-sUAS missions, the company said Wednesday.
Representatives from military branches and the U.S. Special Operations Command participated in the downselection process.
The FAAD C2 system is based on an open architecture that Northrop applies to all-domain command, control, communications, computer and intelligence platforms. The system uses sensors and alert systems that are designed to help warfighters deter UAS, rocket, artillery and mortar threats.
Northrop added it will provide its technology to the U.S. Army’s Initial Maneuver Short Range Air Defense and Integrated Air and Missile Defense Battle Command System programs.
