Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) will help the U.S. Navy equip Zumwalt-class guided missile destroyers with a hypersonic boost glide system under a potential $2.22 billion contract.
The award has an initial value of $1.1 billion and calls for the installation of the Conventional Prompt Strike system on DDG vessels, Lockheed said Friday.
Under the contract, Lockheed will support efforts to integrate the naval platform composed of launcher, control and all-round-up missile components.
The Department of Defense said in a separate announcement that funds will cover the procurement of long-lead materials, special tooling and equipment needed for missile production.
General Dynamics‘ (NYSE: GD) mission systems division and Northrop Grumman (NYSE: NOC) will serve as Lockheed’s subcontractors on the hypersonic strike capability project with the Navy.
The industry team will aim to deliver the new system to the service by the mid-2020s.
