A Boeing-led (NYSE: BA) team has received a six-year, $6.56 billion contract modification from the Missile Defense Agency to continue the production and sustainment of the Ground-based Midcourse Defense ballistic missile defense system.
The modification covers the delivery of a new missile field with 20 additional silos; two additional silos in an existing missile field at Fort Greely, Alaska; and 20 additional Ground Based Interceptors, the Defense Departmentsaid Wednesday.
The group will develop a boost vehicle; integrate the boost vehicle with a redesigned kill vehicle; supply GBI assets for laboratories and tests; develop, integrate, test and deploy ground systems software; and provide cybersecurity and logistics support, among others.
Work will occur in Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado and other government and contractor locations through December 2023.
The award brings the contract’s total potential value from $6.1 billion to $12.6 billion.
MDA obligated $213.8 million in fiscal 2017 and fiscal 2018 research, development, test and evaluation funds at the time of award.
The Boeing-built GMD works to detect, intercept and destroy long-range ballistic missiles in the middle of their flight path.
