Boeing‘s (NYSE: BA) Insitu subsidiary has secured a potential multiyear, $117 million contract to provide small unmanned aircraft systems to support intelligence, reconnaissance and surveillance missions onboard the U.S. Coast Guard‘s National Security Cutter fleet.
Insitu said Monday it will help the service branch install and deploy ScanEagle sUAS for up to 200 hours in every patrol period of 30 days.
ScanEagle is designed to detect, identify and classify potential threats by transmitting imagery, target acquisition and communications data.
“USCG will continue to push the limits of unmanned aviation,” said Donald Williamson, vice president and general manager at Insitu’s defense group.
“We are proud to have earned the opportunity to continue to support the invaluable service the men and women of the U.S. Coast Guard provide to this country,” Williamson added.
Insitu won a contract two years ago to provide sUAS support for the USCGC Stratton, which used the ScanEagle in drug interdiction efforts.
The service branch commenced the installation of sUAS infrastructure in April and intends to install hardware on James, Munro and Bertholf cutters through 2019.
