CH2M Hill Wins $2.1B Extension on DOE Nuclear Complex Cleanup Project

CH2MhillCH2M Hill Plateau Remediation Co. has won a five-year, $2.1 billion extension to continue helping the Energy Department carry out a cleanup project at a decommissioned nuclear complex in Hanford, Wash., the Tri-City Herald reported Friday.

Annette Cary writes the contract was initially worth $4.5 billion over five base years and included an option for an additional five years.

DOE said in April 2012 it intended to exercise the option and told the company Thursday of its final decision, Cary reports.

The contract received $1.3 billion in American Recovery Act funds, increasing the base period’s funding to $3.6 billion, according to the report.

CH2M Hill will work with DOE to prepare the Plutonium Finishing Plant for demolition by removing radioactive sludge from the K West Reactor Basin and moving it to central Hanford, Cary writes.
