Battelle has appointed retired Air Force Maj. Gen John Folkerts to lead its special operations-focused business, the organization announced Thursday.

The Columbus, Ohio-based research and development firm said he will be based in Tampa and serve as the senior executive for managing business with all active, guard and reserve U.S. special operations forces and organizations.

“In addition to his rich technical background and military expertise, he brings a deep understanding of special operations and a strong connection to that vital community, ” said Steve Kelly, president of the national security global business.

Folkerts, a 34-year military veteran, served a tour as vice commander of the Air Force Special Operations Command, based at Hurlburt Field, Fla.

He also held four commander assignments and graduated from the National War College.

Prior to his retirement in June 2008, he most recently served as director of strategic plans and programs at Air Force Materiel Command, based at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio.

Battelle has worked with special operations customers to meet mission and technology requirements in tactical hardware, vehicles, communications systems robotics and undersea technologies.
