Raytheon Co. has won a $7 million contract from the Office of Naval Research (ONR) to improve the semiconductors used by U.S. military agencies. Under the contract, Raytheon will improve the yeild and integration densities of compound semiconductor and silicon complementary metal oxide semiconductor transistors fabricated on silicon wafers. This award is the second part of a previous contract from the ONR, and work will be completed for the Compound Semiconductor Materials on Silicon program, funded by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).
The Office of Naval Research is responsible for a variety of science and technology programs intended to deepen the Navy’s capabilities, and according to Dr. Tom Drake, head of the agency’s Ocean Battlespace Sensing Department (Code 32), ONR is currently working on many cutting-edge technologies and leveraging novel approaches to research and development. He discussed several of these initiatives during the Potomac Officers Club’s 10th Annual Defense R&D Summit on Wednesday.
