What Has Sam Kaardal’s Career Focused On?
As deputy assistant secretary for interoperability, Kaardal focuses on advancing interoperability of health IT systems, specifically the ability of different health IT systems and software applications to communicate and exchange data effectively. Interoperability is important for improving healthcare delivery, enabling more seamless data-sharing among providers, patients, and payers, and supporting public health goals.
Kardaal has an extensive background in military health and is highly sought-after for his expertise. Before joining ASTP in August, he spent roughly seven years working on Capitol Hill in a variety of positions:
- Most recently as GOP staff director on the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs technology modernization subcommittee. Here he oversaw legislative and oversight responsibilities related to IT systems and interoperability goals, especially for technology policy and veterans’ healthcare data.
- Kardaal has also held roles as staff member and professional staff member on the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs and worked in a variety of legislative assistant positions for members of Congress, including Rep. Mike Bost of Illinois and Rep. Pete Stauber of Minnesota.
Kaardall spent eight years in the U.S. Army Reserve as a logistics officer, making him intimately familiar with veteran healthcare and the technology requirements in the defense healthcare system.
