The U.S. State Department recently approved Bahrain’s FMS request, which is expected to improve the defense capabilities of the country against current and future threats, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency said Thursday, noting that Bahrain is a major non-NATO ally significant to maintaining political stability and economic progress in the Middle East. Delivering HIMARS will also enhance the security of U.S. installations and personnel in Bahrain, enable integration into U.S.-led coalitions and support U.S. interests and the security of U.S. forces in-theater.
Bahrain FMS Package Inclusions
The approved FMS package request includes four units of M142 HIMARS, three units of International Field Artillery Tactical Data Systems and items not considered as major defense equipment, including M28A2 Low Cost Reduced Range Practice Rocket pods, High Mobility Multi-Purpose Wheeled Vehicle configured as Fire Direction Centers, M1084A3 HIMARS resupply vehicles, HIMARS Driver Vision Enhancer systems and AN/PSN-13 Defense Advanced GPS Receiver.
Lockheed HIMARS Features
HIMARS, manufactured by Lockheed, carries a six-pack of Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System and two Precision Strike Missiles or one Army Tactical Missile System missile, and is designed to launch the entire Multiple Launch Rocket System family of munitions.
HIMARS, which has self-loading, autonomous features, was combat-tested during Operation Iraqi Freedom, according to a Military.com report. A C-130-transportable equipment, HIMARS can be deployed into complex areas, where heavier launchers are not suitable.
