SAIC has appointed Stephen Smith, a retired U.S. Army lieutenant general, as vice president and client executive.

The company announced the appointment in a LinkedIn post published Thursday.

What Will Smith Do at SAIC?

In his new role, Smith will work to build stronger ties with SAIC’s defense customers and align their operational requirements with the company’s capabilities.

SAIC said Smith’s Army career gives him direct knowledge of the issues facing its defense partners. The company added that his background will support its efforts to improve readiness and mission delivery, with a focus on meeting the needs of warfighters.

Who Is Stephen Smith?

Smith is a retired Army lieutenant general who spent 35 years in the service, holding leadership roles in joint and multidomain operations, according to his LinkedIn profile.

Before joining SAIC, he was deputy commanding general of U.S. Army Western Hemisphere Command from April 2024 to August 2026. In that position, he oversaw homeland defense, theater security cooperation and strategic engagement with 31 countries in Central and South America.

Smith serves on the advisory council of the International Stability Operations Association and the external advisory board of North Carolina State University’s Defense and Security Institute. He is also a member of the board of advisors at Ascent Solar Technologies.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from The Citadel and an MBA from Mississippi State University.

What Other Developments Has SAIC Announced Recently?

Smith’s appointment follows other leadership moves at SAIC, which named John Wagner senior VP of enterprise growth for its Air Force, space and intelligence business in June.

On the contract front, SAIC secured a leading position on a $192 million Air Force contract supporting Advanced Battle Management System digital infrastructure development. In August, the company won a $400 million recompete contract from an intelligence agency, bringing its Intel Space contract wins to over $1.6 billion in the first half of fiscal 2027.

More recently, SAIC received a $742 million U.S. Customs and Border Protection task order for traveler and cargo security systems and completed its acquisition of Information Security Corp., an encryption software developer, to expand its zero trust and post-quantum cryptography capabilities.
