- GovExec has turned to a veteran media executive to lead the company
- Hartman to move into a senior advisory role during the transition
- McCarthy previously led Atheneum and Dodge Construction Network
Dan McCarthy, former CEO of global insights firm Atheneum, has been named CEO of GovExec, succeeding Tim Hartman, who stepped down Tuesday after more than 12 years in the role, Washington Technology reported.
Hartman’s departure concludes more than 25 years with GovExec and its former parent company, Atlantic Media. Peter Goldstone, chairman of GovExec’s board, said Hartman will move into a senior advisory role in the coming weeks to support the company’s continued growth.
What Were Hartman’s Contributions to GovExec?
Hartman led GovExec’s 2020 spinoff from Atlantic Media and oversaw 14 acquisitions, including GovTribe in August 2021 and 1105 Media’s Public Sector 360 Group the same year, which added Washington Technology and FCW to the company’s portfolio. In September 2021, GovExec acquired public sector research and insights firm Market Connections to expand its data and insights offerings for government contractors.
GovExec integrated the personnel, portfolios and capabilities from those deals to build a lead and intelligence platform alongside its digital media business, and the company grew fivefold during Hartman’s tenure as CEO.
Goldstone thanked Hartman for his 25 years of leadership and said he built GovExec into the platform it is today.
“He built the well-respected and premier platform that GovExec is today, and his vision and persistence led the company through an extraordinary business transformation,” Goldstone said in a statement.
Hartman said GovExec’s AI tools and new products have changed how the company’s government clients and decision-makers work together.
“I am deeply proud of what our team has built and confident in Dan’s leadership for our next chapter,” Hartman said.
What Did Executive Mosaic’s Jim Garrettson Say About the Transition?
Jim Garrettson, founder and CEO of Executive Mosaic, recognized Hartman’s contributions to the government contracting community.
“Tim has always been a guiding light and north star in this industry and I will watch with great interest to see his future moves, as I’m certain they will be of consequence,” Garrettson said.
Garrettson congratulated McCarthy on his new role.
“Dan McCarthy, we at Executive Mosaic are wishing you the best as you take responsibility over one of the pillars of our industry,” he said.
What Is GovExec?
GovExec is a public sector media and market intelligence company that publishes Government Executive, Defense One, Nextgov/FCW, Route Fifty and Washington Technology. Its publications cover federal management, national security, federal technology, and state and local government.
The company provides data and business development tools for government contractors through government contracting market intelligence platform GovTribe, local government contact database Power Almanac, and aerospace and defense market intelligence firm Forecast International.
Who Is Dan McCarthy?
McCarthy is a former reporter with more than 25 years of experience leading information, data and media businesses through complex transitions, according to GovExec. At Taunton Press, he led the publisher’s shift toward digital subscriptions and e-commerce.
He later served as CEO of Dodge Construction Network, where he doubled revenue through organic growth and a key acquisition. Most recently, McCarthy served as CEO of Atheneum through Gallarus Advisors and restored the company’s profitability.
Goldstone noted that McCarthy’s data- and technology-first approach will support GovExec’s organic and M&A-driven growth.
“Dan brings deep experience helping information businesses sharpen their strategic focus, strengthen performance, and pursue growth,” Goldstone said.
McCarthy plans to work with the GovExec team to build on the company’s relationships with government decision-makers and the companies that serve them.
“I’m excited to work with and learn from this team to build on that foundation and accelerate growth,” McCarthy said.
