Kirsten Billhardt, global marketing director for edge and IoT solutions at Dell Technologies (NYSE: DELL), said edge computing could help government agencies empower their employees to accelerate and carry out missions by providing them quick access to insights and intelligence.
“By having access to intelligence right where data is being generated and analyzed, frontline workers can be empowered to make data-driven, timely decisions that advance the agency’s mission,” Billhardt wrote.
“They can be more productive because they’re not waiting for answers to come back down the line, and they are more engaged because they’ve been invested with the capacity to make good decisions,” she added.
Billhardt noted edge computing could help agencies enhance security, reduce vulnerabilities and achieve compliance with data privacy and data locality requirements as well as help advance mission-critical artificial intelligence, virtual reality and precision robotics when paired with 5G technology.
She said there are three factors agencies should consider when adopting edge computing and one is looking at it “as part of a larger continuum alongside their core technologies, including cloud.”
The two other considerations are the need for agencies to “design for consistency in management and orchestration” and look at the opportunities that edge computing offers.
