BWXT Names Thomas Burns as Next SRMC President, Program Manager

BWX Technologies has announced the appointment of Thomas Burns Jr. as president and program manager for the BWXT-led Savannah River Mission Completion joint venture.

Burns, who currently serves as SRMC’s vice president and chief engineer, will assume his new roles on June 7, BWXT said Wednesday.

Career Highlights

Burns has nearly three decades of nuclear and engineering experience in the management, design and construction, and operation of complex nuclear material processing and waste disposition facilities.

Before his appointment at SRMC, he held the vice president and chief engineer positions at BWXT, which he joined in November 2020 after spending 15 years as senior vice president at Parsons.

The executive earned his doctorate, master’s and bachelor’s degrees in nuclear engineering from the University of Virginia.

DOE Contract Win

The Savannah River Mission Completion joint venture includes Amentum and Fluor. In 2021, the Department of Energy’s Office of Environmental Management awarded SRMC a potential 10-year, $21 billion indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity Savannah River Site Integrated Mission Completion Contract.

Work under the contract includes:

  • liquid waste stabilization and disposition
  • project management and support services
  • storage of liquid radioactive waste
  • remediation, treatment and disposal of nuclear materials
  • remediation and treatment of contaminated surface water, groundwater and soils
  • decontamination of nuclear facilities and equipment

“Since joining BWXT, Tom has proven to be an exceptional talent ideally suited for this important role for our DOE customer,” said Heatherly Dukes, BWXT Technical Services Group president. “Our SRMC joint venture at the Savannah River Site has delivered a steady stream of safety and operational accomplishments since we assumed the liquid waste contract in 2022.”

“Tom has played a vital role in our efforts there, and we look forward to the company’s continued success under his leadership,” Dukes added.

Burns will replace Dave Olson, who led the SRMC as president and program manager since November 2021.
