The Department of Defense said Wednesday the two additional GPS IIIF satellites are expected to be delivered by November 2031. Lockheed Martin will build the satellites in its facilities in Littleton, Colorado. The Space Systems Command in Los Angeles, California, will obligate $55 million from fiscal 2025 missile procurement funds at the time of award. The recent modification brings the total satellites ordered by the Air Force to 12, raising the contract’s total value to $4.1 billion.
Lockheed was initially selected as the contractor for the first GPS III program. In September 2018, the company received a nine-year, $1.36 billion contract from the Air Force to build the 11th and 12th GPS IIIF satellites. This falls under the potential $7.2 billion follow-on contract, which provides options allowing the production of up to 22 space vehicles.
The 2018 contract covers the procurement of space vehicle test beds and simulators, engineering support, launch and on-orbit services, and space vehicle storage. It also includes options for up to 22 GPS III satellites.
