Vice President JD Vance on Saturday swore Pete Hegseth, a former Army National Guard officer, into office as the 29th secretary of defense, DOD News reported Monday.
Making DOD ‘Laser-Focused’ on Lethality, Readiness
During his Jan. 14 confirmation hearing, Hegseth cited the need to reinstate the warrior culture within the Pentagon.
“When President Trump chose me for this position, the primary charge he gave me was to bring the warrior culture back to the Department of Defense,” Hegseth said. “He, like me, wants a Pentagon laser-focused on lethality, meritocracy, warfighting, accountability and readiness.”
The DOD secretary highlighted the need to bring back warfighting by rebuilding the military, reestablishing deterrence and restoring the warrior ethos.
Pete Hegseth’s Career Background
The former infantry officer in the Army National Guard participated in several active-duty deployments, supporting operations at Guantanamo Bay and leading troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The Princeton University graduate’s military awards include the Joint Commendation Medal, two Bronze Star Medals and two Army Commendation Medals.
Hegseth is a former Fox News host who has authored several books, including The War on Warriors.
