White House, DOD, IC Officials to Brief Senators on Artificial Intelligence

Officials from the White House, Intelligence Community and the Department of Defense will hold on Tuesday a classified briefing on artificial intelligence with senators as lawmakers work to advance legislative measures for AI, Reuters reported Monday.

Avril Haines, director of national intelligence; Kathleen Hicks, deputy secretary of defense; Arati Prabhakar, director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy; and Vice Adm. Frank Whitworth, director of the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency; are among the officials who will brief the senators through a sensitive compartmented information facility at the U.S. Capitol.

Haines, Hicks, Prabhakar and Whitworth are all Wash100 awardees.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said the briefing seeks to inform lawmakers of how the U.S. government is adopting and investing in AI to safeguard national security and enable them to learn of AI-related activities of adversaries.

“This will be the first-ever classified all-senators briefing on national security and AI,” Schumer wrote in a Sunday letter to his colleagues of the upcoming work period.

“Our job as legislators is to listen to the experts and learn as much as we can so we can translate these ideas into legislative action, with our committees continuing to serve as the key drivers,” he added.

In June, Schumer proposed the Safe Innovation Framework for AI Policy to establish guardrails to help ensure security, accountability, foundations and explainability when it comes to AI innovation.
