GPO Selects Thales, Infineon to Secure Electronic Passport Credentials

Thales‘ digital identity and security business and Infineon Technologies‘ Americas subsidiary have secured a potential 10-year contract to help the Government Publishing Office embed electronic security features in U.S. passports.

The contractors will equip blank e-passport covers with computer chip technology and software to support the agency’s manufacturing work for the State Department, GPO said Wednesday.

GPO has incorporated security features into the country’s official travel document since 2005 and is also tasked with manufacturing the Next Generation Passport books, which include enhanced security features to prevent counterfeiting.

French company Thales acquired Gemalto for approximately $5.6 billion in 2019 and rebranded the latter as Thales DIS.
