A BWX Technologies (NYSE: BWXT) subsidiary will establish a process line for converting uranium oxide to a purified metal product under a five-year, $428 million contract awarded by the National Nuclear Security Administration.

Nuclear Fuel Services will set up conversion and purification processes for highly enriched uranium at NFS facility in Erwin, Tennessee, following the completion of design and demonstration services under a $57.5 million phase one contract, BWXT said Monday.

In the prior phase, NFS demonstrated an oxide-to-metal processing method that complies with agency specifications.

“The conversion process is similar to other work we currently perform, and we are confident that we will meet the demands of Phase II of the contract while maintaining a strong focus on safety and quality,” said Sharon Smoot, president of BWXT Nuclear Operations Group.

Under the follow-on award, NFS will provide HEU purification and conversion services to NNSA until the agency completes modernization efforts at the Y-12 National Security Complex.
