BAE to Modernize USS Essex Amphibious Assault Ship Under Potential $148M Contract

BAE Systems has won a potential $148.2 million contract from the U.S. Navy to maintain, repair and modernize USS Essex for the amphibious assault ship’s fiscal 2022 docking selected restricted availability.

The firm-fixed-price contract has a base value of $125.5 million, which the military service will obligate immediately, and would reach the ceiling value if all options are exercised, the Department of Defense said Friday.

Naval Sea Systems Command solicited proposals for the project through the SAM website and expects BAE’s ship repair business in San Diego to complete work by October 2023.

USS Essex is the second ship in the Navy’s Wasp class, and the company helped maintain the lead vessel, USS Wasp, under a $237.7 million contract awarded in November 2020.
