White House Forms National AI Research Resource Task Force

The Biden administration has created a new task force to work on a roadmap meant to expand access to research tools to advance innovation in the field of artificial intelligence.

The National Artificial Intelligence Research Resource Task Force, which was created in accordance with the National AI Initiative Act of 2020, will act as a federal advisory committee to implement a blueprint for a shared research infrastructure that will provide AI students and researchers access to computational resources, educational tools, user support and data, the White House said Thursday.

The task force will provide technical capabilities, administration, governance and recommendations for establishing the National AI Research Resource infrastructure and submit two congressional reports outlining its strategy and implementation plan for NAIRR.

The group is expected to deliver an interim report to Congress in May 2022 and a final report in November 2022. It also plans to post a request for information in the Federal Register to seek public input on NAIRR implementation.

Lynne Parker, director of the National AI Initiative Office at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, and Erwin Gianchandani, deputy assistant director for computer and information science and engineering at the National Science Foundation, will serve as co-chairs of the task force.

Other members of the task force are:

  • Andrew Moore, Google
  • Dan Stanzione, University of Texas, Austin
  • Daniela Braga, DefinedCrowd
  • Elham Tabassi, National Institute of Standards and Technology
  • Fei-Fei Li, Stanford University
  • Frederick Streitz, Department of Energy
