 has won a potential $90 million contract to build up to 50 next-generation patrol boats for the U.S. Navy.The Navy initially ordered 11 PB(X) vessels along with with trailers, spares, training packages and technical support services, Metal Shark said Monday.
The company aims to construct a welded-aluminum pilothouse patrol vessel that will be powered by twin-diesel inboard and hydrojet propulsion systems and designed to travel at a speed of more than 35 knots.
Metal Shark added the 40-foot PB(X) will have ballistic protection features and accommodate crew-served or remotely operated weapons systems.
The military branch plans to replace up to 160 force protection boats currently in service with the Navy Expeditionary Combad Command’s Coastal Riverine Forces over the next 15 years.
