Huntington Ingalls Industries (NYSE: HII) hasÂ acquired the underwater drone manufacturing businessÂ ofÂ Columbia Group for an undisclosed amount.
The division will operate as a subsidiary known as Undersea Solutions GroupÂ within Newport News Shipbuildingâs submarine and fleet support division, Huntington Ingalls said Friday.
Matt Mulherin, HIIÂ corporate vice president and Newport News Shipbuilding president, said the company made the acquisition to add new manned and unmanned submersible design programs toÂ Newport News Shipbuildingâs submarine work.
The renamedÂ Undersea Solutions Group will continue to beÂ based in Panama City Beach, Florida, where it works onÂ unmanned underwater vehicles for the U.S. Navy and international clients.
âTogether we can support the development of large and very large unmanned undersea vehicles and stay in step with the Navy as unmanned systems take on greater and more complex roles in the undersea battle space, â said Ross Lindman, Â a senior VP at the USG business.
