Carl Smith: Northrop Wins $238M AF Countermeasure System Support Contract

northrop Grumman_BLUENorthrop Grumman (NYSE: NOC) has received a $238 million contract modification to provide additional hardware and support work for a countermeasure system the Air Force uses to protect large aircraft from missiles.

The company will continue to supply the branch with Large Aircraft Infrared Countermeasure transmitters, lasers, missile warning sensors, processors, control interface units and support equipment through April 2016, Northrop said Wednesday.

“This represents a continuation of a 14-year relationship with the Air Force to protect our aircrews, ” said Carl Smith, vice president of infrared countermeasures programs at Northrop’s land and self protection systems unit.

Smith added the company built the LAIRC system with an open architecture intended to help the service update the platform for its future missions.

Northrop’s IR countermeasure technologies are installed on more than 1, 000 fixed-wing and rotary-wing military planes worldwide and work to help aircrew track and deter missile threats, the company says.

A partnership between Northrop and Selex ES has supplied more than 3, 250 pointer and tracker systems for their military customers’ large aircraft.
