Patrick Gibbons, a 30-year corporate communications veteran, has joined the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory as chief communications officer.
Gibbons will manage the lab’s communications and branding strategy and oversee the organization’s office responsible for employee communications, media relations and social media programs, APL said Thursday.
He previously served as vice president for public relations and corporate communications at RTI International, a nonprofit research and development organization based in Research Triangle, N.C.
RTI works with 12 Cabinet departments and six other U.S. government clients.
Before joining RTI, he served as communications director for the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality and held senior communications positions in the U.S. Marine Corps for the 12 years prior, including time as media relations director for Marine Corps headquarters at the Pentagon.
