Mary Schapiro, former chairman of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, has joined Washington-based consulting firm Promontory Financial Group as a managing director and chairman of the governance and markets practice.

She will work with clients on corporate governance and provide them advice on managing risks, Promontory said Tuesday.

During her three-year tenure as SEC chairman, the agency issued a record number of enforcement actions and carried out a restructuring program aimed at helping protect investors, Promontory said.

“Managing those risks while balancing the interests of the many constituencies of a modern corporation challenges practices of corporate governance, regulatory policy and market behavior, ” Schapiro said.

“While regulators are charged with policy making in these areas, the private sector — especially investors — has the largest stake, ” she added.

Eugene Ludwig, Promontory founder and CEO, said the firm appointed Schapiro for her knowledge of financial markets and regulatory leadership experience.

She joins the firm to complement its involvement in capital markets, hedge fund and private equity advisory and compliance services, Ludwig added.
