Exelis-ELTA Team Building Coast Guard Maritime Surveillance Radar

ExelisLogoITT Exelis (NYSE: XLS) will supply a new radar system to the U.S. Coast Guard for maritime reconnaissance missions such as surveillance, drug interdiction and counterterrorism.

Exelis and partner ELTA Systems Ltd. won a $6.5 million award to provide the Coast Guard the AN/APY-11 multimode radar, which they previously built under a contract awarded in 2005, Exelis said Thursday.

The radar is intended for the Lockheed Martin-made (NYSE: LMT) HC-130J Super Hercules surveillance aircraft, which flies maritime surveillance missions in areas not patrolled by medium-range surveillance aircraft or cutters.

HC-130J planes also transport maritime safety and security teams, port security units and National Strike Force personnel and equipment.
