Mitre CFO Mark Kontos on R&D in Govt, Future Tech Projects

Mark Kontos

As senior vice president and chief financial officer at non-profit Mitre Corp., Mark Kontos is responsible for managing the corporation’s finances as it manages federally-funded research and development centers.

In a recent interview with ExecutiveBiz, Kontos said he first examined Mitre’s data systems for making business decisions and aimed to introduce a new system based on data and modeling.

That process also involved taking a more strategic process and increased use of performance metrics, he said.

Mitre — headquartered in McLean, Va. and Bedford, Mass. — manages five research and development centers backed by funding from the federal government.

Kontos outlined agencies the corporation works with at the R&D centers as well as what the corporation can and cannot do in terms of technology development.

Mitre does not work with commercial firms nor compete with them, he said, but the corporation works with agencies to analyze data when they introduce or manage new technologies.
